In this second blog in our series “Foundations of Brand Development,” we focus on the logo: an essential visual element that often serves as the first point of contact between a brand and its audience.</strong></p>

       The Role of the Logo</h2>
<p>The logo is more than just a visual representation; it’s a symbol that evokes emotions, builds trust, and distinguishes the brand from its competitors. A strong logo is simple and recognizable, timeless, and versatile across various platforms and media.</p>

      The Four Components of a Logo</h2>
<p>A powerful logo consists of four elements, each contributing uniquely to the brand identity:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Name</strong> – The most constant element in a logo, clearly conveying the brand identity. The name should be linguistically and culturally appropriate and legally protected. <li><strong>Typography</strong> – The font that not only visualizes the name but also gives it a unique character. Some brands, like Coca-Cola, rely solely on typography for brand recognition.</li>

<p><strong>3. Color</strong> – Colors evoke specific associations and enhance brand recognition, such as Kärcher&#8217;s signature yellow or NIVEA&#8217;s distinctive blue.</p>


<p><strong>4. Symbol</strong> – A visual element that makes the brand instantly recognizable, like McDonald&#8217;s iconic &#8220;M.&#8221; However, it&#8217;s important not to overestimate the power of the emblem and avoid using it independently too early, before brand recognition is well established. We recommend consistently using the full logo, including the emblem, until sufficient brand awareness has been achieved.</p>

       Legal and Cultural Considerations in Logo Development</h2>
<p>When developing a logo, it’s essential not only to create harmony between the elements above but also to consider legal and cultural factors. The logo must be unique and legally protectable in the markets where the brand operates. Additionally, logos can carry cultural meanings or associations that vary by region, making it prudent for internationally ambitious brands to conduct a marketing and cultural assessment.</p>
<p>After creating the name <a href="https://www.remarkable.eu/en/case/belfius">Belfius</a>, we conducted an extensive international study to ensure the equals sign in its symbol would not carry unintended or negative associations worldwide. This symbol plays a central role in the logo, reflecting values of equality and transparency that the brand aims to convey.</p>
<p>Remarkable also advised <a href="https://www.remarkable.eu/en/case/samsonite">Samsonite </a>to integrate its emblem into the wordmark. The goal was to add depth to the logo while making it more compact and functional. By respecting the brand’s strong heritage, we gave the &#8220;bagel&#8221; emblem a new role, resulting in a consistent and more recognizable logo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Using the logo consistently across all channels establishes strong brand recognition. This consistency builds trust and credibility with customers, helping them identify with the brand and fostering loyalty.</p>

Alle ingrediënten voor Nutreco’s duurzame toekomst

<p>BP Nutrition, met een portfolio van erfgoedmerken in diervoeding, had een nieuwe naam nodig om hun onafhankelijkheid van BP te weerspiegelen en hun toewijding aan duurzaamheid en kwaliteit te benadrukken. De rebranding moest Nutreco positioneren als een leider in duurzame diervoeding en innovatie.</p>


De uitdaging

<p>We doorliepen een meerstaps naamgevingsproces om de naam Nutreco te creëren, een combinatie van nutrition, ecology en economische waarde. De nieuwe merknaam belichaamt de kernwaarden van kwaliteit, innovatie en duurzaamheid.</p>

<p>Na de scheiding van BP had Nutreco een merk nodig dat hun ambitie voor duurzame en innovatieve groei weerspiegelde. We begonnen met een diepgaande analyse van de missie, waarden en aspiraties van het bedrijf, met een focus op kernwaarden zoals kwaliteit, vertrouwen, marktleiderschap en voeding.</p>


Een nieuwe weg naar duurzaamheid en leiderschap

<p>Met een helder gedefinieerde briefing gebruikten we een funnel-aanpak, beginnend met brede concepten en deze verfijnend tot de perfecte keuze. Nutreco kwam als winnende naam uit de bus, omdat het de essentie van voeding en groei perfect vastlegt. De naam is eenvoudig te onthouden, wereldwijd toepasbaar en krachtig in zijn eenvoud.</p>

<p>De rebranding naar Nutreco gaf het bedrijf een frisse, uniforme identiteit die spreekt tot hun leiderschap in duurzame diervoeding. De nieuwe naam speelde een cruciale rol in de succesvolle positionering van Nutreco op de Nederlandse beurs en later als onderdeel van de SHV-holding.</p>
