Wat onderscheidt een blijvend merk van een voorbijgaand succes? Niet louter aanwezigheid, maar de capaciteit om koers te zetten in plaats van te volgen. Ze doen dat niet door hun verleden eindeloos te herhalen, maar door zich telkens opnieuw af te stemmen op wat relevant is.
Microsoft illustreert dat perfect. Wat begon als software voor personal computers, is vandaag een technologiebedrijf dat actief inspeelt op de doorbraak van artificiële intelligentie. De vraag is dan: hoe bewaak je je identiteit terwijl je jezelf voortdurend heruitvindt?

Binnen merkarchitectuur verwijst het begrip &#8216;KernMerk&#8217; naar het centrale merk dat de identiteit, het vertrouwen en de langetermijnconsistentie van een merkportfolio bewaakt. Het is de stabiele drager van waarden en beloftes, waarbinnen submerken, productextensies en innovaties zich kunnen ontwikkelen zonder de samenhang te verliezen.
Extensies mogen variëren in doelgroep of functie, maar blijven herkenbaar binnen het kader dat het KernMerk uitzet. Die combinatie van consistentie en wendbaarheid vormt de basis voor een coherent én toekomstgericht merkenbeleid.

Microsoft werkt met een hybride merkarchitectuur die inspeelt op de uiteenlopende rol en zichtbaarheid van producten binnen het portfolio. Sommige merken, zoals Bing of Xbox, dragen de Microsoft-signatuur subtiel: de link met het KernMerk is herkenbaar in context, maar de merknaam functioneert autonoom.
